Who we are:

Tradition Jiu-Jitsu Academy is the first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school that is based in the heart of Tradition, Port St. Lucie and provides kids and adults training programs. Our classes are instructed by Valeria and Mateo Nunez, whom offer a detailed insight into the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for all skill levels. The Nunez couple have extensively trained and competed over the years and train regularly to stay up to date with the current techniques to provide new and advanced students in basic fundamental self-defense methods and advanced level training. They accommodate both the beginner students and competitors, and seek to improve their student's performance in the art of Brazilian Jiu jitsu.

Valeria Nunez

IBJJF Verified Referee

Valeria’s Lineage: Mitsuyo Maeda > Carlos Gracie > Helio Gracie >Rickson Gracie > Marcelo Behring > Waldomiro Perez > Roberto Godoi/Jorge Patino > Roger Coelho

Favorite position/ Technique: Half Guard

Born and raised in Costa Rica, Valeria got into jiu-jitsu in 2010. She used to play rugby in college and started going to the gym to get stronger for her games and there is where she found jiu-jitsu. At first, she didn’t want to start jiu-jitsu because she was already in rugby, but she fell for it so much that she even quit rugby so she can be 100% in jiu-jitsu. In 2014, she started teaching kids and women's classes and this is where she discovered her passion for teaching the art. Her passion is to help people be better versions of themselves through jiu-jitsu. In addition, she complemented the jiu-jitsu teaching with a personal trainer certification and other functional training courses. In 2017, she was promoted to brown belt under Roger Coelho. In 2019, she moved to the United States and in 2020 she stopped training so she can dedicate her life to raising her children. At the end of 2023, she came back to the mats as a mother of two and ready to keep growing as a student and teacher and became a NASM certified personal trainer. She is committed to use all her knowledge as a jiu-jitsu competitor, trainer and mother to develop kids and women emotionally and physically through the jiu-jitsu training sessions. As she always says “You have to be a black belt inside and outside the mats.”

Mateo Nunez

Mateo’s Lineage: Mitsuyo Maeda > Carlos Gracie > Carlson Gracie > Ricardo De La Riva > Vicente Júnior > Mateo Nunez

Favorite Position/Technique: Lasso guard

Mateo's interest in sports and martial arts started at 6 years old and has continued throughout his life. He was first introduced to Jiu-Jitsu by UFC Referee Mario Yamasaki while they worked together. After attending his first class, he was hooked and started his Jiu-Jitsu journey in November 2007 with the Yamasaki family and was promoted up through purple belt by Fernando Yamasaki. In 2012, Mateo continued his training under the guidance of David “The Rock” Jacobs (Rest in Peace) and Abmar Barbosa and was promoted to brown belt by the duo in 2014. He continued his training with them until 2019 and moved on to join Vicente Junior at Conquest BJJ. In 2022, Mateo was promoted to black belt by Vicente Junior, who is a black belt under the legendary Ricardo De La Riva. Since the move to Florida, Mateo now trains with the Brazilian Top Team under world class black belt competitor Gabriel Procópio Fonseca and still competes in various tournaments. An avid Jiu-Jitsu competitor since 2011, Mateo has been competing and medaling at various Jiu-Jitsu events including numerous IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championships and Super fights. Some of his most notable victories have been Champion at the ADCC Virginia Beach Nationals, Champion at the IBJJF New York BJJ Pro, and Winner at Fight2Win Pro 53MD where he walked away with the brown belt 'Fight of the Night". Through his training and competitions, Mateo continues to share what he has learned from all of his past and present world class instructors to give back to the students of TJJA.
